There are 18 Air Combat Commands, which come under Air Force Intelligence, the Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency, and the 67th Network Warfare Wing. The largest training wing in the United States Air Force, the 37th Training Wing offers basic military, technical, and professional skills. In addition, the wing offers operating support to over 70 associate and tenant units. Each year, over 86,000 students graduate from the 37th Training Wing. Lackland Air Force Base History.

Lackland Air Force Base got its start on the Fourth of July in 1942 as San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center the (SAACC) when the War Department separated a part of Kelly Field and made the base its own installation. Known on occasion as “sad sack” because of its acronym, the base went through many other official names before it was finally renamed five years later in honor of Brigadier General Frank D. Lackland.
